K&J – The 2015 NYSSMA Zone 6 All State Area Music Festival

In today’s WNBZ Podcast… A musical program. That’s because we spent the day at the New York State School Music Association 2015 Zone 6 Area All State Music Festival in Peru. The music festival is attended by some of the best high school musical performers in the state. The program begins with a mixed chorus, and continues with the Area All State Concert Band followed by the women’s chorus, and the Jazz Ensemble.

The battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend begins on Thursday evening this week at 4pm at Riverside Cemetery here in Plattsburgh..  And while there are many excellent events throughout all four days..

We invite you to join us for the K&J show today ( Click on the play bar above ) We’re going to be looking at where many of the re-enactors spend the weekend..  In fact, it’s one of the highlights of the weekend for re-enactors… The encampment on the lawn at the Kent-Delord House Museum.. And that’s where we caught up with the Museum’s Director Don Wickman…

Our coverage of the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration is Presented by Price Chopper, In the Community for Good..

If you would like to take a tour, feel free to stop by… It’s located at 17 Cumberland avenue right across from the Champlain monument which is also where the Saratoga replica demonstration takes place on Sunday..  The schedule includes concerts through the evening plus Fireworks on Friday night, The Street Battle on Saturday followed by the parade on Saturday afternoon.. More activities on Sunday plus the Israel Green Tavern is open through the weekend.. and of course the encampment at the Kent Delorde House Museum begins with re-enactors arriving on Friday for the weekend..

K&J – Touring the Battle of Plattsburgh Museum

BOP 01The Allan S. Everest Interpretive Center is a permanent exhibit located within the War of 1812 Museum on Washington Rd on the Museum Campus. The exhibits chronologically recount the events of the battles at Plattsburgh within the context of the War of 1812: the political and economical causes of the war; the land and naval engagements at Plattsburgh; and the significant role that the battles here played in the final peace negotiations. It’s just a small portion of Part Two of our tour of the Museum ( Click the Play Bar to listen )

The exhibits are “anchored” by a 5’x15′ diorama and an interactive scale model of the village and surrounding area as it was in 1814. The diorama provides the visitor with an aerial view of the 30,000-acre battlefield, the British and American encampments, the forts and batteries, and the culminating land and naval battles of September 11th, 1814.

The Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Committee is September 10-13. The Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration (BOPC) Admission Button is available for $15 and is available at North Country Food Co-op, Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, Cornerstone Bookshop, Plattsburgh City Marina, Kent-Delord House Museum, Battle of Plattsburgh Association, NBT Bank, Champlain Wine Company, Cook & Gardener, Aubuchon Hardware-Skyway Plaza, and Studley Printing.

The design of this year’s Commemoration Button is by Emily Ferdinandi of Mooers Elementary School. Ms. Ferdinandi submitted a poster as part of the BOPC Poster Contest, which invites area 4th graders to design a Battle of Plattsburgh poster. Ms. Ferdinandi’s poster was selected out of more than 200 poster submissions. (… Click above for more )

Today we’re going to look ahead just a few weeks to the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration… and this year, Mayor Calnon has tasked the City’s new Events Coordinator Sandra Geddes with helping to coordinate the logistics and the planning of all of the weekend’s activities… We sat down just outside of her office which for the summer is located on the waterfront at the City’s new Marina…. She is focused for the next few weeks on making sure the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration goes off without a hitch. The Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Committee is seeking volunteers for numerous events and activities throughout the Commemoration Weekend, which is September 10-13.

PARADE – SLIDE“Volunteers are crucial to the overall success of the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration.” said the City of Plattsburgh Promotion & Events Coordinator, Sandra Geddes. “This event brings more than 10,000 people to the downtown City streets; our volunteers make it possible to provide the best quality events & entertainment to our guests.”

Strand’s Offsite Gallery Program Includes 9 Local Businesses

Nine new exhibits have been rotated to feature original artwork in local Plattsburgh businesses as part of The Strand Center for the Arts Off-Site Gallery program.

The exhibits will be on display from now through September and each features a variety of area artists. The nine Off-Site Gallery locations include the Best Western, Valcour Imaging, Days Inn, The Development Corp, Clinton Community College, Eye Care for the Adirondacks, CVPH and the Plattsburgh Public Library.

The Strand’s Gallery and Museum Coordinator Christina Elliott says “The Off-Site Gallery Program is provided as a service to area businesses in an effort to diversify the visual environment of their offices and give local artists a different level of exposure than a typical gallery audience.” Galleries are rotated on a quarterly basis, (… Click above for More)
