AdkAction has launched the "Don't Be Salty" campaign to address the environmental damage caused by excessive road salt use in the Lake Champlain Basin. The campaign highlights the harmful effects of road salt on local waterways, such as increased chloride concentrations, which harm plants, algae, and aquatic animals. The 2024 State of the Lake report shows rising chloride levels in the lake and its tributaries, with the Winooski River now contributing over twice the chloride it did in the 1990s. The campaign includes an informational video, a dedicated webpage, and community outreach, providing resources on reducing salt use and tools like salt-spreading cups to help residents minimize salt application. AdkAction's goal is to raise awareness about the issue and promote smarter salting techniques to protect the health of Lake Champlain and its surrounding environment.
