Essex County's health outcomes are generally on par with New York State averages and better than the national average, according to the 2025 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The rankings highlight Essex County’s strengths, including improving access to primary care, low unemployment, and universal access to parks and recreational facilities. However, the county faces challenges such as high obesity rates, mental health concerns, and a shortage of mental health providers, with 18% of adults reporting frequent mental distress. Additionally, high child care costs and socioeconomic disparities are significant issues affecting community well-being. Essex County Health Director Linda Beers emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation to address these challenges and improve health outcomes for residents.
