The town of Keene has temporarily closed a popular trailhead due to flooding in the high peaks region. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that the road to the Garden parking lot and trailhead was washed out following heavy rain and melting snow. The Garden parking lot serves as a key starting point for hikers exploring summits like Gothics Mountain, Sawteeth Mountain, and Mount Marcy. In the summer, hikers use the High Peaks shuttle service to reach the Garden trailhead if the lot is full. The DEC advises hikers to avoid trails above 2,500 feet during "mud season," which lasts from late March to mid-June, and suggests finding alternative hiking locations.
