Nine employees were detained during an immigration raid at the Tupper Lake Pine Mill last Tuesday, conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The mill’s spokesperson confirmed that the agents arrived without a warrant or prior notice, sparking concerns over the detention of workers who were all reportedly verified through the I-9 process. The Quebec-based company is cooperating with ICE but has struggled to reach the detained workers. Local officials, including Tupper Lake’s police chief, were informed of the raid, but the Franklin County sheriff was not notified. Mayor Mary Fontana expressed concerns about the lack of empathy in enforcement actions, calling for more care in such situations.
