The free talk aims to provide the public with a deeper understanding of autism and how to support those on the spectrum.
The Autism Alliance of Northeastern NY, in partnership with SUNY Plattsburgh, is hosting a free talk by internationally recognized motivational speaker, poet, author, and disability advocate Russell Lehmann on Thursday, April 3, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Giltz Auditorium (47 Beekman St., Plattsburgh). The event aims to provide the public with a deeper understanding of autism and how to support those on the spectrum.
Lehmann, an award-winning speaker and advocate, is known for his authentic perspective on autism, which he shares through personal stories and insights. His talk will focus on creating space for individuals to feel validated, fostering deeper connections, and unlocking transformative spaces for empathy and understanding. Lehmann's approach emphasizes genuine curiosity and empathy, moving beyond strategies to truly connect with individuals on the spectrum.
A meet-and-greet and book signing with Lehmann will follow the talk, with light refreshments provided for attendees. While the event is free, the Autism Alliance encourages attendees to register in advance for better planning: Event Registration Link.
Executive Director Laura Carmichael expressed the hope that the talk will be valuable to caregivers, school professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about autism. "Even if only a handful of people come, it’s valuable to those people," she said. The event is part of the Autism Alliance’s efforts to raise awareness and connect the community. They also have upcoming events, including their annual walk on May 3 and a comedy show in the fall.
The event is free thanks to support from donors and fundraising efforts, particularly from the Alliance's annual walk, which helps fund their programs. "We wanted to make this talk accessible to everyone," Carmichael added.
