It’s Illegal To Get Sick In This Italian Village

The mayor of Belcastro in Italy has issued a ban on illness and injury. Mayor Antonio Torchia has ordered locals to "avoid contracting any illness" and to "not to leave the house too often, travel, or practice sports." This ban, which is obviously impractical, serves to call awareness to the fact that the residents don't have easy access to emergency care. The nearest ER is 30 miles away, and many of Belcastro's 1,200 residents are elderly. "The ordinance is a cry for help, a way to shine a spotlight on an unacceptable situation," Torchia said. Since announcing the ban, the town has received attention from local health authorities. (newser)
