Scientists from Trinity College Dublin and Bournemouth University have discovered that ancient women in Britain's Iron Age controlled property and marriage. DNA analysis found that these societies, which existed between 800 BC to 43 AD, were organized around female family lines. Daughters would stay in home territories as men moved elsewhere to marry. These women may have even been warriors and led armies. "Most members traced their maternal lineage back to a single woman, who would have lived centuries before," Dr. Lara Cassidy said. "In contrast, relationships through the father’s line were almost absent." (Study Finds)
